Oils

Louise has been enjoying the trees, their patterns and their abstraction. She wants to immerse the viewer in the texture and atmosphere that light plays amongst the dense branches and undergrowth of a wood. These textured oil paintings invite the viewer to step into the painting, to kick through the leaves and brush past the low branches and undergrowth.

Louise enjoys the physicality of creating the shapes with canvas and strings applied to the canvas. As these grow on the canvas the woods grows. There is a wonderful moment, before the picture has any paint applied, when the image is made up entirely of texture, light and shadow.

Each painting has an ambiance of its own, but they really come to life when natural light moves across the painting. These paintings are not for an exhibition space with controlled lighting - they are so much better viewed in a room where the light changes with the sun or the clouds. The texture and depth create their own shadows which move with the changing light.

Shimmering Birch (2011)

Medium: Textured Oil on Canvas,
Size: 70cms x 100cms,
Price; £2500, Original SOLD, prints still available.
This subject lends itself so well to the properties of this method of painting. The silver birch is one of the last trees to relinquish their summer leaves. In their attempt to hold on to summer they cling to their yellow and ochre leaves that capture autumn sunlight. This painting is made up of shadows as well as structure and colour. The leaves appear to shimmer as the light changes and moves across the painting.

A Promise of Summer (2011)

Medium: Oil on Canvas,
Size: 70cms x 80cms,
Price; £700 available
Louise captured one of those days when the sky is almost colourless. Haze is lifted from a late spring soil by a hot sun. The haze obscures the blue sky but not the heat. The ground is warm and humid and buttercups thrive, glowing hot yellow even in the shade.

A Winter Walk (2011)

Medium: Textured Oil on Canvas,
Size: 90cms x110cms,
Price; £2500, Original SOLD, prints still available.

There are many banks of trees in this wet, wooded and hilly area. Many of the trees have their roots exposed and the trees cling to the banks. It is an area that is almost constantly wet for three of the four seasons, but when the sun shines low through the trees the light is warm and intense. Damp undergrowth shines with oranges and rusts and the sky blues are luminous in contrast. The warmth of the sum brings up mists from the damp earth.

An Autumn Walk (2011)

Medium: Textured Oil on Canvas,
Size: 80cms x 100cms,
Price; £1800, available
A warm grey sky with the hint of silver grey light brings out the beautiful autumn colours of this wood. The colours of the sky are echoed in the undergrowth and texture and pattern threads it way around this painting. The effect is like a piece of textile or tapestry.

Autumn Glory (2011)

Medium: Textured Oil on Canvas,
Size: 90cms x 110cms,
Price; £2500, Original SOLD, prints available
Once Louise realised the properties of this method of painting she felt compelled to paint the extraordinary spectacle of copper beech trees in their autumn splendour. Every leaf in this painting has been applied and painted. Each one casts its own slight shadow and with the gloss of oil paint this painting shimmers with movement and colour as the light changes in the room.

Autumn Leaves (2011)

Medium: TexturedOil on Canvas,
Size: 70cms x 100cms,
Price; £2500, Original SOLD, prints still available.

This painting is made up of canvas and strings applied to the canvas and then painted in oils. It is a perfect medium to capture the depths and intricacies of these dense woods. It was one of the first paintings using this technique and was a delight to paint. Everything about the image lent itself to this method, paint adhered to the grooves and gaps of the applied texture, branches and leaves emerged from the shadows, and depths receded within the textures.

Early Evening (2011)

Medium: Textured Oil on Canvas,
Size: 70cms x 100cms,
Price; £1800, available
These two paintings: Early Evening and Early Morning play with the light within the painting both in colour and in the textures and their shadows. The subtle hues were determined by the paintings as they developed almost independently of the artist. The result has both the warmth and the chill of these periods in the day.

I Dreamt of a Forest (2011)

Medium: Textured Oil on Canvas,
Size: 51cms x 76cms,
Price; £1250 available
All the textured oils pass through this stage when they are painted completely white. This creates a wonderful play of light and shadows within the paintings. Some are kept at this stage. They have dream like elements and are suggestive of distant memories and forgotten emotions, intuition and experiences.

Perception (2011)

Medium: Textured Oil on Canvas,
Size: 76cms x 51cms,

These paintings might at first sight seem very minimalist are in fact detailed and intricate. Louise uses the subliminal expectations and memories of the viewer to fill in the details of the image. Each viewer may be provoked by a different stimuli, or synaptic response determined by personal memories and experiences.

Strong, Sharp, Winter Sun (2010)

This painting marked the beginning of this technique. It was developed out of other works and is an important link to more experimental work. After working with felts, using wools and threads Louise built this complex lace of twigs, branches, light and shadows.

The Warmth of a New Day (2011)

Medium: Oil on Primed, Textured Papers, framed behind glass,
Size inc frame: 70cms x 80cms,
Price; £550 available
The textures of these paintings collect paint in their grooves and crevices, so darks form as pigment pools. It is a method that allows colour to create tonal depths within the texture. Various glazes of colour are applied to build up colour and depths in the painting. Because the paint is applied in thin glazes the white of the undercoat makes the pigment translucent and is perfect to capture glowing light.
